Sillustani features around 90 chullpas (funerary towers) shaped like inverted cones. Historically, before the bodies of the highest-ranking Kolla authorities were placed in these tombs, they were mummified in a fetal position. These authorities were prominent figures associated with the Inca Empire era.

Tour Itinerary

Pick-up from respective hotels (city center) or the Plaza de Armas takes place between 1:45 PM and 2:00 PM, followed by the journey to the Sillustani funerary towers (approx. 45 minutes). The visit lasts 1 hour and 30 minutes, allowing time to admire this vast necropolis—the largest of its kind in Peru. Built from volcanic stone, these towers reach heights of up to 12 meters. Kolla leaders were buried here alongside the gold and silver attire, utensils, and instruments they used in life, reflecting their belief in eternal life. Known as the “House of the Dead,” this site on the Sillustani peninsula—surrounded by Lake Umayo—was chosen by cultures such as the Kolla, Lupaca, Tiahuanaco, and Inca as a resting place for spirits. It is an excellent spot to watch the Andean sunset at an altitude of 4,000 meters above sea level. The site also features high-relief carvings—such as a puma head, a lizard, and a snake—as well as the “Inti Watana” temple. On the return trip to Puno, there will be a visit to a traditional local home.
