Climb aboard the boat and begin your voyage to the distant Floating Islands – a 25-minute journey, in which you can absorb the tranquillity and stillness of the magnificent Lake Titicaca, only disrupted by the passing of another vessel.
As you approach your destination, take note of the large, grass-like reeds growing by the wayside, which are famously used in the construction of the islands you’re about to visit. Practice your Quechua greetings with your guide, and get ready to meet the Uros people, who are eagerly waiting to receive you.
On arrival, you’ll be helped down onto dry land, and shown around one of the islands. Meet the local inhabitants, see the way they live, and learn from your guide just how vital the totora reed is for this community. You’ll be given the opportunity to ride on a traditional reed boat (at an additional cost), and experience this unique form of transport normally used by the island dwellers.
In this modern day and age, it is rare to find a community who have such a special relationship with their surrounding environment, and with such an ingenious way to live sustainably. Seize the chance to pay a visit to the Uros people whilst you’re in Puno, and witness this for yourself!

Do the tour prices include the island entry fees? Do I need to take extra money? | Yes, all of the tour prices include the associated island entry fees. If you’ll be heading to the islands of Taquile and Amantani we advise you to take some money for souvenirs, as they are renowned for some of the finest woven goods in Peru. |
Do the Uros people actually live on the islands and are they worth the visit? | The Floating Islands in Puno are the original, authentic Floating Islands. Due to their unique nature, they have become a very popular tourist attraction in Peru and have become almost a victim of their own success. A visit is still definitely worthwhile, not only to learn about the incredible construction of these islands (houses and boats are all made out of reeds) but also to see how the Uros locals manage to forge a subsistent life out in the middle of Lake Titicaca on these tiny, buoyant islands. Tourism is now their number one income, and whilst families do live out on the islands, a lot of the families and younger members do work and study in Puno. |
